A little boy whose change in behaviour was a great puzzle to family and nursery staff.

This is the true story of a little boy, A, whose mother rang me up in the month of October many years ago to share her anxiety with me.
From being a happy go lucky 3 year old who had settled well at nursery, he had suddenly become anxious, did not want to go to nursery any more, and was wetting himself at night in his sleep – this was very unusual as he had been ‘dry’ for over a year.

The doctor had checked for a urine infection, but drew a blank. The mother was at her wits end as A was now having leaks during the day as well as the night for no obvious reason.

She rang me, in some distress, to get some help.

homeopathy in EdinburghIt all started in early October, when he woke up wet one night, and this became a daily pattern. He would wake up at night saying he was scared, and wanted to sleep with his parents in their bed. He needed someone with him when he went to bed at night. From really enjoying nursery, he was trying to hide behind his mother’s legs when she took him there. This clinginess was very odd, because it was not in his nature. A little probing revealed that A was scared of monsters, and then his mother told me that they had been ‘doing’ Halloween at nursery for the past 2-3 weeks. The last piece of the puzzle fell into place.

On the basis of all the issues that A was struggling with, a remedy called Pulsatilla was selected for him and given on Oct 25. On Oct 27, his mother rang me to say “Pulsatilla has worked like magic! He is sleeping well, not waking up. And there have been no leaks at night or at nursery”. It was early days, but as time went on, A had slipped back into being who he really was, and the anxiety and fears that led to physical problems, eg incontinence, had vanished.

This is a wonderful example of a close fit between the patient and the homeopathic remedy. Pulsatilla is made from the windflower, and is used, amongst many things, for a tearful, fearful person who needs a lot of reassurance. When they are sick, they are very clingy and needy. In A’s case, his change in behavior to being very clingy was very marked, and this was an important marker (but not the only one) for choosing the remedy he got. Pulsatilla is known as the Queen of Remedies, as it’s therapeutic range is very large, and it can be used for many problems if the match between remedy and patient is close. Homeopathy can be used successfully for problems of anxiety and fear, as illustrated in this example. Homeopathy can also be used for children, who find the wee tablets easy to suck, and with a pleasant taste.
